Rob Marshall, working from a script by David Magee, is the director of the 2023 American musical fantasy picture The Little Mermaid. It is a live-action version of Disney's 1989 animated picture The Little Mermaid, which is based in part on Hans Christian Andersen's 1837 fairy tale. It is co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures, DeLuca Marshall, and Marc Platt Productions.
Halle Bailey plays the lead in the movie; other supporting cast members include Melissa McCarthy, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem, and Jonah Hauer-King. Following the mermaid princess Ariel, who is enthralled with the human world, the story follows her as she strikes a pact with the sea witch Ursula to be able to walk on land after saving Prince Eric from a shipwreck.
Plans for a remake of 1989's The Little Mermaid were confirmed in May 2016. In December 2017, Disney announced Marshall was being courted to direct the film.
Bailey, Hauer-King, McCarthy, Bardem, Diggs, Tremblay, Awkwafina, and the rest of the cast joined between July and November 2019. Production was expected to begin in London between late March and early April 2020 but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, before ultimately took place from January to July 2021, primarily at Pinewood Studios in England and on the island of Sardinia, Italy. Composer Alan Menken returned to augment the score and write new songs alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda, who serves as a producer with Platt, John DeLuca, and Marshall. The film is dedicated to the late Howard Ashman, who co-produced and co-wrote the songs from the original film.
The film is Disney's twenty-third most expensive to date.
The Little Mermaid premiered at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on May 8, 2023,[5] and was released in the United States on May 26. It received mixed reviews from critics and grossed over $569 million worldwide, $298 million of which was earned in the United States and Canada, making it the tenth-highest-grossing film of 2023 and the seventh-highest-grossing amongst Disney's live-action adaptations.
Triton challenges his advisor Sebastian the crab after observing Ariel acting carelessly, and Sebastian replies that Ariel actually saved a person. Enraged, Triton goes to see Ariel in her grotto, and burns her collection of human artefacts when she doesn't make a vow to never go back to the surface. Later, Ariel is accosted by two moray eels that were sent by Ursula, the sea witch who was exiled from Atlantica fifteen years earlier and was the sister of Triton.
At Ursula's lair, Ariel is offered a deal: she has to be kissed by a "true love's kiss" to stay human for the whole three days that she will change back to human. If Ariel doesn't succeed, she'll turn back into a mermaid, and Ursula will take her back. To turn human, Ariel needs to donate
Triton approaches Ursula because he wants to rescue Ariel. She made an unbreakable agreement with Ariel, though. She is horrified when Triton exchanges himself for Ariel and gets transformed into dust by the eels. Upon Eric's arrival, Ursula takes possession of Triton's trident; during the following struggle, Ursula unintentionally kills her eels. She becomes enraged and uses the trident to grow larger in order to threaten Ariel and Eric by calling for a storm.
Ursula is distracted by Eric while Ariel boards a surfacing ship and uses its broken bowsprit to stab her. Triton resurrects after Ursula dies, and both he and Ariel acknowledge the sacrifice that the other made for them. After she gets back home, Ariel is sad since Eric isn't there. Ariel permanently changes into a human thanks to Triton's guidance from Sebastian, and she reunites
