Zhi (Jimmy O. Yang) is a sluggish loris who lives with his grandmother in a small Chinese town in a universe where animals have human characteristics. When he was younger, he looked up to cane toad racer Archie Vainglorious (John Cleese),
but as an adult, he learned that Vainglorious Industries intended to destroy his hamlet and replace it with cane toad housing. Zhi is expecting an understanding with Vainglorious at first, but he finds him arrogant and contemptuous instead. Nonetheless, Vainglorious consents to take on Zhi in a future rally race that will determine the village's fate. Out of a sense of obligation to Zhi's late mother, retired goat racer turned mechanic Gnash (J. K. Simmons) grudgingly consents to assist Zhi with his training. Zhi is also given a car by Gnash, and she rides .
Zhi meets and eventually falls in love with Shelby (Chloe Bennet), a fellow slow loris, during the break in between the race's stages. He doesn't realise that she works for Vainglorious and gives him the information that Zhi gives her. After learning that she harbours romantic feelings for Zhi, Shelby grows more and more conflicted about her dishonesty and ends her relationship with Vainglorious. Zhi defeats Vainglorious and saves his town with the aid of the other racers who feel sorry for him. Due to their financial interest in Vainglorious winning the race, Vainglorious loses his cool and faces the wrath of his family
