It was produced by Dana Murray, produced by Pete Docter, co-directed by Kemp Powers, and co-written with Mike Jones. The voices of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Rachel House, Richard Ayoade, Phylicia Rashad, Donnell Rawlings, Questlove, and Angela Bassett are prominently featured.
It centres on Joe Gardner (Foxx), a middle school teacher and aspiring pianist who suffers a brain injury and has to try to bring his body and soul back together in time for his big break as a jazz musician. In January 2016, Docter came up with Soul, researching the genesis of human personalities and the idea of determinism. He presented the concept of spacetime involving souls with personalities to Jones at their initial meeting. Producers of the movie conferred with a number of jazz musicians, such as Terri Lyne Carrington and Herbie Hancock, and used musician Jon Batiste's sessions as a model for the musical scenes. In addition to Batiste's original jazz songs, the film's soundtrack was written by musicians Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. With a budget of about $150 million, production on Soul continued for four years. It was the first Pixar movie with a black lead actor.
Pianist Joe Gardner hopes to play jazz professionally and works as a part-time music teacher at a middle school in New York City. Joe's mother Libba pushes him to take the offer of a full-time teaching position, but he refuses. Joe finds out that jazz club tryouts are being held by renowned musician Dorothea Williams, who has a vacancy in her quartet. Dorothea is impressed by his piano playing and decides to hire him for the event that evening. Joe stumbles down an exposed manhole as he leaves because of his excitement. When Joe returns to Earth, he brings 22 with him by mistake.
As a result, when they wake up in Joe's hospital ward, Joe is in the body of a therapy cat and 22 is in Joe's body. After finding Moonwind, they arrange to meet at the jazz club that evening in order to get Joe back into his body. Meanwhile, 22 grows accustomed to Joe's physique and begins to enjoy simple pleasures like food, the breeze, and music. She gains a deeper perspective of life through her heartfelt interactions with Libba, Joe's barber Dez, Joe's pupil Connie, and Joe's mother, who she persuades to allow Joe to play in the band.
Terry, the entity responsible for calculating the number of souls, learns that the count is incorrect and comes to Earth Although a moving performance, the jazz club show is a triumph. Looking at the few items that 22 had gathered while inhabiting his body, Joe considers 22's misery and recalls their happy times together, realising that these encounters were what ignited 22's light. Joe enters the Zone while playing the piano with the intention of giving back 22's badge, but it's too late when he finds out that she's turned into a lost soul who is consumed by the thought that she is meaningless. Joe tracks her down and shows her a sycamore seed she saved as a memento of her Earthly journey. They understand that a spark is just a soul's yearning to survive, not its ultimate purpose. Joe puts 22 back to normal by returning her. |
