The best pals are Alex and Rosie. Alex discovers he has affections for Rosie as he gives her an inebriated kiss during her eighteenth birthday celebration. Rosie tells Alex that she regrets being drunk and wishes the night had never happened the next day while suffering from a headache and having her stomach pumped.
Unaware that Rosie was completely forgetting the previous evening, he takes her statements to mean that she simply wants to stay friends.
Rosie receives an invitation to the school dance from Greg, the "fittest guy in their year".
Though she had originally planned to travel with Alex, she accepts Greg's invitation after finding out that Alex may be considering going with Bethany, the popular girl in their year. When Rosie and Greg have intercourse after the dance, the condom falls out of her body. Encouraged by her father, a valet at a hotel, Rosie applies to and is admitted into Boston College's hotel management programme with the goal of operating her own hotel one day. When she gets to Alex to tell him, she finds him having sex with Bethany, which makes her throw up.

learning that she is expecting, Rosie doesn't want to inform Alex since she thinks he won't be able to attend Harvard to assist take care of her. She gives birth to a girl she names Katie after he departs for America. After Rosie runs into Bethany with Katie, Alex becomes the godfather and finds out that Rosie is pregnant. After five years, Rosie pays Alex a visit in Boston, where they spend the evening chatting and exploring the city. She learns that his girlfriend Sally is expecting the next morning.
She chastises Alex for his living arrangement and tries to talk to him about it, but he rejects her, stating that their child would at least have both parents.
Alex finds out at that very moment that Rosie cannot recall their 18th birthday kiss. He comes to the realisation that his interpretation of her wish to remain platonic—her wish to forget that night—was incorrect. With the money she received from her father,
Rosie realises her dream of opening her own hotel. She has Alex as her second visitor. Upon his arrival, Alex discloses to Bethany that he had broken his marriage and tells her about a dream he's been having of the two of them being together. Then Alex and Rosie kiss.
