Fire-related components Bernie[c] and Cinder[d] Lumen move to Element City, where they encounter prejudice from other elements that are classical. After Ember[e] was born, they opened a convenience store named the Fireplace and displayed their Blue Flame, a symbol of their customs. After a few years, when Bernie calms down a bit, he plans to retire and give Ember the store. When Ember is left to manage the store by herself by Bernie one day, she runs to the basement because she is too overwhelmed by the number of clients.
In a fit of rage, she bursts a water pipe, flooding the basement and drawing the attention of Wade Ripple, a city inspector and water element, who discovers the malfunctioning plumbing. Wade goes to City Hall and unwillingly accepts Ember's attempts to stop him.
Not long later, Firetown floods as the dam's newly installed seal cracks. Wade evaporates from the confines of the fireplace after Wade and Ember are stranded inside after saving the Blue Flame. After the flood passes, a distraught Ember tells Bernie that she loves Wade and that she does not want to manage the Fireplace. Ember plays the Crying Game to encourage Wade to drip back into his regular form after realising he has condensed inside the stone ceiling. Wade and Ember give each other a hug and their first kiss.
After several months, Bernie has retired, and his pals are now in charge of the Fireplace. Wade and Ember, who are now a relationship, depart from Element City so that Ember may begin her internship.
