Produced by Mediawan and ZAG, Inc. in partnership with the French business Miraculous Corp., the series is also co-produced by the European division of the Japanese studio Toei Animation and a number of other international companies.

The show centres on Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste, two teenagers from Paris who, in order to defend the city from supervillains, change into the superheroes Ladybird and Cat Noir, respectively. The sitcom debuted in South Korea on EBS1 on September 1, 2015, before moving on to TF1's TFOU block in France on October 19, 2015 With a few exceptions in certain nations, it is primarily aired internationally on Disney-owned channels or on Disney+. The experiences of two teens, Adrien Agreste and Marinette Dupain-Cheng, are the focus of the story, which is set in contemporary Paris They use enchanted jewels called the "Miraculous" to change into their separate superhero characters, Ladybird and Cat Noir, when evil strikes. Adrien is in love with Ladybird but not Marinette, while Marinette is in love with Adrien but not Cat Noir. Throughout it all, Marinette and Adrien battle their feelings for one another without realising what the other is thinking. The supervillain Hawk Moth, who the heroes are unaware of, is actually Adrien's father, Gabriel Agreste. He is their greatest foe. He "akumatizes," or transforms ordinary Parisians into supervillains, when they feel bad by using the Butterfly Miraculous to make akumas, butterflies imbued with terrible energy.

He wants to use the stolen Miraculous from Ladybird and Cat Noir to wish his wife Emilie, who used the damaged Peacock Miraculous to enter a coma before to the events of the series, back to life. Occasionally, he receives help from his helper Nathalie Sancoeur, who crafts sentimonsters—magical lifeforms with an apparently limitless array of forms and abilities—using the Peacock Miraculous. Master Fu, the Guardian of the Miraculous, permits Marinette to borrow more Miraculous and enlist her fellow classmates and friends as superheroes as Hawk Moth's foes grow more formidable. Eventually, Master Fu is forced to appoint Marinette as the new Guardian after Hawk Moth exposes him. After using the Peacock Miraculous, Nathalie becomes unwell, but Hawk Moth fixes it and utilises it.
