Orion, an 11-year-old boy with a long list of unreasonable concerns, is extremely nervous in 1995 Philadelphia. He worries about getting turned down by Sally, his school infatuation, at the next planetarium field trip, and he writes about his anxieties in his diary. Orion's darkest dread, Dark, appears in his bedroom one night following an unexpected blackout.
Dark, weary of Orion's incessant criticism of him, offers to accompany Orion on a vacation to help him get over his concerns by introducing him to the wonders and advantages of the night. In order to allay Hypatia's anxieties, an adult Orion is revealed to be narrating her the story along the route.
Orion meets Sleep, Insomnia, Quiet, Unexplained Noises, and Sweet Dreams on their journey, thanks to Dark. Reluctantly, they allow Dark to show Orion what they've been working on. As they drive, Dark demonstrates to Orion how varied sounds can be eliminated by quiet, how sleep can put people to sleep, how insomnia can cause worry and wake certain people, how unexplained noises can create a variety of noises outside homes, and how sweet dreams can create great dreams.
The night entities' work is initially hampered by Orion's nervous behaviour, but as he gets to know Dark and finally becomes friends with him, Orion assists Dark in his duties. Furthermore, Light—Dark's adversary—who brings nighttime in the nights and sunshine in the mornings—is briefly encountered by Orion.

As they travel on, Orion says unintentionally that Light seems better than Dark since it makes him feel warm and secure. The other entities, disheartened, decide to labour during the day instead of continuing with their nightly responsibilities. Dark stops on a mountaintop, devastated and angry at their abandonment. A guilty Orion begs Dark to move so that Light may pass through and destroy him, but Dark refuses to move and disappears when Light does, leaving Orion behind.
Alone at this point, Orion feels bad about what he did as he sits on the hilltop, realising that it is the back of a flying turtle.
The narrative concludes once more, revealing that an older Hypatia is narrating the tale to her son Tycho. The story concludes with Hypatia saying goodnight to her parents, the by-now much older Orion and Sally, while the scene rewinds to a youthful Orion and Sally stargazing during their planetarium field trip.
DreamWorks Animation, Mikros Animation, and Netflix Distribution are the producers of the 2024 American animated fantasy adventure comedy film Orion and the Dark.
It was written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Sean Charmatz (in his feature directorial debut), and it was based on Emma Yarlett's 2014 children's book of the same name.
The voices of Nat Faxon, Golda Rosheuvel, Natasia Demetriou, Aparna Nancherla, Carla Gugino, Matt Dellapina, Angela Bassett, Paul Walter Hauser, Colin Hanks, Mia Akemi Brown, and Ike Barinholtz are the film's main cast members.
The film's musical score was written by Robert Lydecker and Kevin Lax.
Orion and the Dark debuted on January 27, 2024, at the TUDUM Theatre in Los Angeles. On February 2, it was made available on Netflix. Critics have praised the film's storyline, animation, themes, and performances, giving it favourable reviews.
