Yash Chopra's 1961 Hindi film Dharmputra is based on Acharya Chatursen's book of the same name. Yash is a second-time director of this film. It was the first Hindi movie to show Hindu extremism and the division of India. Produced by his older brother B.R. Chopra, who founded B.R. Films in Mumbai in 1956 after being relocated from Lahore during India's partition.

Amidst the backdrop of the partition, the film addressed topics of religious prejudice, extremism, and communalism. Two years prior, Yash Chopra had made his film debut with the Nehruvian secular film Dhool Ka Phool (1959), which starred the iconic song "Tu Hindu Banega Na Musalman Banega, Insaan Ki" and told the story of a Muslim raising a "illegitimate" Hindu child.

Shashi Kapoor, who had a crucial role as a Hindu fanatic in this movie, made his feature film debut as an adult actor. Shashikala and renowned actor Rajendra Kumar both made cameos for a song. It won the Best Feature Film in Hind category at the 9th National Film Awards.

The story of the Delhi families of Nawab Badruddin and Gulshan Rai is told in the film, which commences in 1925, at the height of Indian independence movement and under British rule. The two families practically live in the same home because of how close they are. Husn Bano, the Nawab's daughter, becomes pregnant after having an affair with Javed, a young guy. The Nawab discovers that Javed has vanished when he tries to set up her marriage to him. Husn is helped by Amrit Rai and his wife Savitri during the birth of their son Dilip, who they even adopt and give their family name to.

The pride of the Rai and Badruddin families is young Dilip. Following their reunion, Husn marries Javed. Meanwhile, the Nawab is slain while taking part in a protest to compel the British to leave India. Years later, the Rai family greets Husn Bano and Javed with open arms when they return. Then she encounters Dilip, who is not the Dilip she left behind. This Dilip is a fascist and hates Muslims. He has teamed up with other radicals to drive out Muslims from India, even going so far as to kill and set buildings on fire. With so much animosity and mistrust between them, how can Husn and Dilip learn to live with one another
