As the movie opens, a clip of the original 1959 Barbie towering over a desert landscape plays, and tiny girls playing with baby dolls start to destroy them. The narrator, Helen Mirren, then begins to explain the sociological impact of the Barbie doll on history. Barbieland is a dollhouse hidden from the outside world that is home to the Barbies, Kens, and other dolls like Allan (Michael Cera) and Midge (Emerald Fennell). A matriarchal society governs Barbieland, and the Barbies hold prominent positions while the Kens live in the shadow of the Barbies as helpless minions. Though Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) isn't aware of it, Beach Ken (Ryan Gosling) is infatuated with her and pursues her nonstop.

Suddenly, (Stereotypical) Barbie begins to doubt her own mortality during a dance party at her house. After a string of misfortunes the following day, including her flawless skin developing flaws and her arched feet becoming flat, Barbie has an existential crisis. While playing with her, the human girl is dissatisfied, so the other Barbies advise her to go see Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon).
