Gopal Mayur is a multibillionaire entrepreneur. He is the patriarch of the Mayur family, a wealthy NRI business family with five generations of London residents. He's got two sons. The eldest son, Hari, is a licenced pilot who spends a lot of time at Mini India, a small airport outside of London, and has a strong connection to his native India. Gopal, who doesn't appear to like India and isn't impressed that his son loves their home nation so much, has assured his English business partner that Hari will wed the man's daughter, who has feelings for Hari. Hari begs his family to call off the wedding since he does not want to marry an Englishwoman, but no one will listen.

But Hari, still alive, washes up on the shores of Mumbai, where she is discovered by Bijuriya, a young child, and Katariya, her older sister. Through tender nursing and caring, Katariya brings him back to health. Following his recuperation, Hari finds out that the British Government has formally pronounced him dead following the failure of a search for his remains. He seizes the chance to marry Katariya, the woman he has fallen in love with, and begin a new life in his beloved India.

Katariya soon finds herself expecting Hari's child. Happiness is short-lived, as during a Diwali party, a fire breaks out at their home, severely injuring Hari and Katariya, who both pass away soon after giving birth to their son, Nandlal Mayur, also known as Nandu. Prior to settling down and taking a career as a pub dancer, Bijuriya gives up her own schooling to raise Nandu, working multiple jobs to pay for his food.

Eight years later, Gopal's younger son, Vikram Mayur, who likewise has a bad opinion of India, has succeeded his father as the chairman, president, and owner of his family's enterprises (though it remains unclear what became of Gopal, who is never seen in the film again). He quickly rises to prominence as a prosperous industrialist. Bijuriya and Katariya's family friend, lawyer Madadgar, discovers that Vikram is both Nandu's uncle and Hari's younger brother after seeing an interview of him on television. He plans to take him to India and abduct Nandu and Bijuriya along the way. Out of misunderstanding, he lodges a case against Hari, compelling Vikram to travel to Mumbai.

English Babu Desi Mem, which translates to "English sir, Indian madam," is a love comedy released in 1996 in the Hindi language. Shah Rukh Khan and Sonali Bendre play father and twin sons, respectively. The 1960 American love comedy It Started in Naples served as a loose inspiration for it. Red Chillies Entertainment, owned by Shah Rukh Khan, currently possesses the film's rights.
