Mr. & Mrs. '55 is a 1955 Indian romantic comedy film from Abrar Alvi's screenplay, directed and produced by Guru Dutt. In this socially conscious urban Mumbai film, Madhubala plays naive heiress Anita Verma, who must wed an unemployed cartoonist (Guru Dutt) in order to keep her millions of dollars.
Mr. & Mrs. '55 was one of Dutt's first productions and one of his rare comedies. When the movie debuted in theatres on February 11, 1955, it became an enormous commercial and critical hit. With its box office success, Madhubala's career took a turn for the better. In 1954, she was considered "box office poison" along with other movie stars. Most people agree that her portrayal of Anita Verma is one of her most recognisable and unforgettable roles.
It was ranked 57th out of "The 100 Best Bollywood films" by Time Out in 2019.The film received praise for its humorous scenes but also criticism for how poorly it portrayed feminism and progressive ideas.
