Don is a well-known criminal lord in Mumbai who, despite being wanted in eleven countries, consistently avoids capture. For the past few years, DSP D'Silva, Inspector Verma, and Interpol officer R. K. Malik have been working to apprehend Don, but without success. Don suffers serious injuries in an accident during a police pursuit and passes away in front of D'Silva, who secretly buryes him. D'Silva finds a street performer named Vijay who looks like Don and hides the fact that Don died even from his fellow police officers. D'Silva begs Vijay to pose as Don in order to enter Don's group. D'Silva will guarantee that Deepu and Munni, the kids Vijay adopted, have a quality education in exchange.
After training Vijay, D'Silva returns him to Don's group under the guise of an amnesiac Don who has been hiding in an apartment block because of his injuries. Vijay begins to learn about Don's gang gradually. Vijay gives D'Silva a diary containing the top-secret details of the criminal network, but Roma is going to murder him because Don killed Don's brother Ramesh and his fiancée Kamini before. When D'Silva shows up at this point, he introduces himself as Vijay rather than Don. Subsequently, Don informs D'Silva in confidence about a network gathering prior to a party.
At the celebration, there is a firefight, and D'Silva gets caught in the crossfire. After discovering D'Silva dead, Vijay is brought into custody
Chandra Barot directed the 1978 Indian Hindi-language action thriller Don, which was produced by Nariman Irani and based on a screenplay by Salim-Javed. Amitabh Bachchan plays two characters in the movie, while Zeenat Aman, Pran, Iftekhar, Om Shivpuri, and Satyen Kappu play supporting parts. Kalyanji–Anandji wrote the lyrics, while Anjaan and Indeevar composed the music.
Box Office India deemed Don, the third highest-grossing Indian movie of 1978, a golden jubilee. The movie gave rise to the Don series, with Shah Rukh Khan appearing in the remakes Don: The Chase Begins Again (2006) and Don 2 (2011), directed by Farhan Akhtar, the son of Javed Akhtar.
It also served as the basis for a number of South Indian remakes, such as the 1979 Telugu movie Yugandhar and the 1980 Tamil movie Billa. The theme music for Don is also well-known; it was featured in the 2008 American Dad! episode "Tearjerker". The Black Eyed Peas sampled "Yeh Mera Dil" for the opening of their song "Don't Phunk with My Heart".
