The sole child of Raju's affluent landowner father Prem Chaudhary (Akash Khuranna) is Anil Kapoor. Raju feels terribly bereft of a mother's affection because he lost his mother at birth.
Prem promises Raju a birthday present on his fifth birthday, and on Raju's fifth birthday, he brings home Lakshmi Devi (Aruna Irani), thinking Raju will have a loving and nurturing mother.
But Lakshmi Devi proves to be avaricious, astute, and crafty. She only got married to Raju's father because of his enormous wealth and possessions.
They plot to move all property into Lakshmi Devi's name along with her brother Totaram (Anupam Kher) and his wife Mynavati (Bharati Achrekar). When Lakshmi Devi and Totaram learn that Prem is merely a trustee to Raju's whole estate—that is, that Prem's first wife had written a will before to her passing—they become furious. According to the will, Raju will only be able to fully control his assets after getting married. He also won't be allowed to move his wealth and assets into a different name without his wife's agreement.
Lakshmi Devi starts her evil plans. She presents herself as a loving mother on the outside, which makes Raju, who is ecstatic to get love from his mother, become a loyal son. He is always willing to follow Lakshmi Devi's instructions and shows her a lot of love and respect. Unknowingly, he gives Lakshmi Devi the opportunity to control him during this procedure. She deceives Raju into abandoning his education with extreme guile. Raju's father called out to Lakshmi Devi to question her after learning that she had instructed him to quit attending school.

Indra Kumar directed the 1992 Indian Hindi drama film Beta (Translation: Son), which was written by Naushir Khatau and Kamlesh Pandey. In the lead roles were Madhuri Dixit, Aruna Irani, and Anil Kapoor. Anand-Milind composed the soundtrack. Songs like "Koyal Si Teri Boli" and "Dhak Dhak Karne Laga" are well-known from the movie. The movie is an authentic remake of K. Bhagyaraj's 1987 Tamil film Enga Chinna Rasa, which was also written and directed by him.
When Beta debuted on April 3, 1992, it quickly rose to the top of the box office. Critics gave it favourable reviews when it first came out, praising Kapoor, Dixit, and Irani's performances in particular.
Beta won a leading five wins at the 38th Filmfare wins, including Best Actor (Kapoor), Best Actress (Dixit), and Best Supporting Actress (Irani). Beta earned a leading nine nominations, including Best Film, Best Director (Kumar), and Best Music Director (Anand–Milind).
