Colonel Sahab (Nazir Hussain), a the Second World War veteran doctor, heads the mental ward. Nurse Radha (Waheeda Rehman) in the same ward is heartbroken as a civilian patient, Dev Kumar (Dharmendra), whom she treated with love and affection, leaves the hospital. She couldn't keep her heart away from her professional work and fell in love with that patient.
Arun Choudhary (Rajesh Khanna), a writer and poet, now enters as a patient, suffering from acute mania as a result of being spurned by his beloved, singer Sulekha. After initially reluctant to care for him, Radha eventually gives in. While caring for Arun, she reminisces about her past and narrates a story of how she took care of injured courageous soldiers.
Arun gradually recovers, but Nurse Radha remains emotionally invested in her patient. Radha becomes emotionally unstable as a result of her inability to cope with her complex emotions. Ironically, she gets admitted to the same room on the ward. Colonel Sahab laments that he always saw her as a loyal nurse but failed to see the lady inside her. Arun agrees to wait for her recuperation.
The Khamoshi (Hindi: ख़ामोशी, the language of Urdu خاموشی, translating: Silence) is a 1969 monochrome Bollywood drama film directed by Asit Sen that stars Waheeda Rehman and Rajesh Khanna. It is most known for its iconic music by Hemant Kumar and lyrics by Gulzar in songs like "Tum Pukaar Lo... Tumhara Intezaar Hai" by Hemant Kumar, "Woh Shaam Kuch Ajeeb Thi" by Kishore Kumar, and "Humne Dekhi Hai In Aankhon Ki Mehekti Khushboo" sung by Lata Mangeshkar. What really made this picture stand out was Kamal the Bose B&W cinematography,

Khamoshi was shot in Kolkata and is centred on the Bengali short tale Nurse Mitra by famed Bengali writer Ashutosh Mukherjee. It is a remake of filmmaker Asit Sen's original Bengali film, Deep Jwele Jaai (1959), which starred Suchitra Sen.The Bengali original performed well at the box office, particularly in metropolitan areas. Impressed by the plot, producer Vuppunuthula Purushotham Reddy and director G. Ramineedu adapted the Bengali film into Chivaraku Migiledi (1960), which was a blockbuster. |
