One night, a monkey (Dee Bradley Baker) is born from a stone atop a tall mountain and disturbs the Jade Emperor (Hoon Lee). Just as the Emperor gives the order to eliminate the cub, Buddha (BD Wong) appears before him and tells him to let him find his purpose. Jade Emperor is the ruler of Heavens, while Buddha is the guiding light of the entire Universe.
Monkey finds a troop of other monkeys, but unruly nature keeps him from fitting in. One of his escapades causes a feared demon to pounce from his mountain lair and grab one of the troop's cubs for food; as a result, Monkey is banished. To prove his worth to the troop, he trains to fight the demon. After many years, when he deems himself ready, he confronts the demon, but his training proves ineffective, and another cub is snatched. To fetch a more suitable weapon, Monkey dives into the sea realm of the Dragon King (Bowen Yang), where he finds the latter gloating over a glowing column which he means to use to eradicate all life on the world's surface. Communicating with the column, Monkey turns it into a staff and escapes.

Taking the staff, Monkey goes back to the demon's den, vanquishes him, and saves the cub. Subsequently, he declares himself the Monkey King (Jimmy O. Yang). James Sie, the senior member of the squad, warns that only gods should wield his staff. In an attempt to win entry into the Heavens and the status of a god, the newly crowned Monkey King chooses to defeat 100 demons. 99 demons are vanquished by the Monkey King on his global journeys. After a while, he finds himself in a village where the Red Girl is a terror.
Jolie Hoang-Rappaport's character Lin supports Monkey King in his fight against Red Girl, and Lin promises to help him. However, the Immortal Ones do not come down from heaven in spite of the 100 demons defeated.
Stick informs The Monkey King that he must attain immortality in order to become an Immortal. Since he cannot read, the Monkey King depends on Lin. The two arrive at a cemetery, where Monkey King creates a Hell portal in order to access the Archive of Souls, remove his name from the Scroll of Life and Death, and become immortal. As the head of Hell and its primary judge, King Yama (Andrew Kishino) sees them as outsiders and battles them. Monkey King erases his name with Lin's assistance, but he just becomes ageless. He discovers that in order to achieve complete immortality, he must consume a peach from the Orchard of Everlasting Life after stealing Yama's Book of Everlasting Life. The Dragon King gently leads Lin and the Monkey King
Lin outwits the aloof and loud Monkey King and gives the staff to the Dragon King. The Monkey King confronts and assaults the Dragon King as soon as he gets it, breaking his word and threatening to drown the entire planet in a massive storm. The Dragon King is tricked by Lin, who realises her error, into sending the Monkey King flying through the air, strengthening him and giving him the advantage over the Dragon King.
But the power-hungry Monkey King turns on the Heavens themselves. Lin wants to give Monkey King another chance, but Buddha is about to step in. Lin, assuming the role of the Buddha, issues a challenge to the Monkey King: if he fails to jump off Buddha's hand and gain control over Heaven, he will have to undergo a penance term. A monkey
