A singer named Raj (Salman Khan) is making his way through the metropolis of Bombay. He finds a way to help a young woman who has fallen in front of a train and stays with her while she is taken to a hospital. Pooja Oberoi (Rani Mukerji), a wealthy family's daughter, survives but goes into a coma. Her family rushes to the hospital and discovers Raj there. Since Pooja's father is more likely to have a heart attack, Raj lies and claims to be Romi.

Pooja's best friend Jahnvi (Preity Zinta) begins spending a lot of time with the pretend Romi as the family comes to know him. They both fall in love with the other, who Pooja's family views as a second daughter. Next, Pooja emerges from her coma and adds to the drama by developing feelings for Raj. During a chat, Pooja and Jahnvi both use the symbol of a hand up to express their love for Raj. However, Jahnvi discovers that Pooja also loves Raj, which causes her to put her hand down.

Jahnvi and Raj ended their romance. Jahnvi steals Pooja's phone on the day of their engagement without realising it because both of their phones have the same design. She makes the decision to go since she knows that Raj would never marry Pooja if she stays. When Pooja answers Jahnvi's cell phone, it's Raj's best buddy pleading with Jahnvi to call off the wedding and return to Raj. Then, Pooja tells everyone about Raj and Jahnvi and how they eventually get back together. Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) is Pooja's choice for a spouse.

जीत (1996) और जुड़वा (1997) के बाद खान और नाडियाडवाला के सहयोग के बीच हर दिल जो प्यार करेगा लगातार तीसरी हिट थी और साथ ही दुनिया भर में ₹965.5 मिलियन की कमाई के साथ साल की शीर्ष कमाई वाली फिल्मों में से एक थी। फ़िल्म ने यूके में शीर्ष 10 चार्ट में प्रवेश किया। 

46वें फिल्मफेयर पुरस्कारों में , हर दिल जो प्यार करेगा को 2 नामांकन प्राप्त हुए - सर्वश्रेष्ठ सहायक अभिनेत्री (मुखर्जी) और सर्वश्रेष्ठ महिला पार्श्व गायिका ( प्रीति और पिंकी "पिया पिया" के लिए)।
