He was born on 23rd September, 1895 in Jammu into the Hindu Kachwaha caste, part of Rajput Community.
He was the last Maharaja (ruler) of the Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir who ascended the throne in 1925 AD after the death of his uncle Sri Pratap Singh.
He brought many reforms in the state, like making primary education compulsory, introduced laws prohibiting child marriage and allowed people of low castes to places of worship.
He signed the Instrument of Accession on 26th October, 1947, through which the Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir went to the dominion of India.
He died on 26th April, 1961.
