Three thousand general hospitals were rated by the Leapfrog Group based on their ability to prevent infections, accidents, and medical errors. Patient safety has improved according to the autumn 2024 assessments on a number of performance metrics, including pharmaceutical safety, hand hygiene, and infections linked to medical care. In the Leapfrog Group's fall 2024 hospital safety ratings, which were made public on Friday, thirty-two Illinois hospitals received the highest ratings.
Two times a year, the nonprofit health care monitoring group The Leapfrog Group gives 3,000 general hospitals letter grades ranging from "A" to "F" based on how well they avoid infections, accidents, and medical errors.
In general, hospitals have made significant progress since the pandemic years, when there was a higher risk of lethal illnesses across the country, but more needs to be done, according to a news release from the Leapfrog Group.

Eighteen hospitals received "B" marks, forty-eight received "C" grades, thirteen received "D" grades, and two received "F" grades. With the largest percentage of "A" hospitals during the third grading cycle, Utah is at the top of the list. Next in line are Virginia, Connecticut, North Carolina, New Jersey, California, Rhode Island, Idaho, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and South Carolina. It was the first time since the fall of 2014 that California was in the top 10. The Leapfrog Group has long prioritized hospital harm and preventable fatalities as a key area of policy concern.
According to a news release from Leapfrog Group president and CEO Leah Binder, hospitals have achieved progress in patient safety that has saved "countless lives." However, she also stated that medical facilities throughout the country must speed up their development because "no one should have to die from a preventable error in a hospital." Significant differences in performance still exist among U.S. institutions, according to Binder. Four states, for instance, lacked "A" hospitals: Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Vermont.
"That's why it's so important for people to look at their grades when deciding whether or not to seek care," Binder stated. "Not every hospital is the same." In the autumn 2022 safety grades, health care-acquired infections nationwide peaked for the first time since 2016, although they have since sharply decreased, the report states.
