Phone emergency alert: Did you get any emergency notifications today on your phone? Here is what it indicates:

Today, the Indian government test-delivered an emergency notice to all smartphones in the country. The message notified recipients that it was a test and that no action was necessary and said "emergency alert: severe."

Many mobile phone users in India received a serious emergency alert from the government on Friday morning. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), which is implementing the nation's new emergency alert system, included this in a test. The test message was sent to a representative sample of smartphones in India, and it prompted users' devices to beep loudly and flash the warning "emergency alert: severe." This test is being used by the NDMA to evaluate the alert system's efficacy and spot any potential issues.

Many cellphone subscribers on various telecom providers in India received a test flash message today from the Department of Telecommunication (C-DOT). Between 12:00 and 12:44 IST, the message was broadcast using the Cell Broadcasting System. Recipients were advised that the communication was a test and that no action was necessary.

"SEVERE alarm in case of emergency. This is a SAMPLE TESTING MESSAGE that the Department of Telecommunication, Government of India, transmitted over the Cell Broadcasting System. As there is nothing you need to do, disregard this message. The National Disaster Management Authority has sent this message to test the Pan-India Emergency Alert System. It aims to improve public safety and deliver prompt alerts in times of need. Flash message received by "15-09-2023 12:19PM #0888758" states:

Rajkumar Upadhyay, the president and CEO of C-DOT, told PTI that the technology for cell broadcast is currently only available through a foreign vendor when speaking about the test before. Because of this, C-DOT is developing it internally. According to Upadhyay, "The NDMA will use the cell broadcast technology, which is currently in development, to deliver notifications straight to mobile phone displays during calamities. Testing is now being done on the BSNL and Jio networks.

He added that several cell broadcast message versions have to be created in order for them to be transmitted across the telecom network.
