Even if nobody knows it, Apple TV+ is the place for science fiction.

For those who enjoy spaceships, robots, mutants, and other exciting things, 1992 saw the creation of a channel dedicated just to the science fiction genre. The Sci-Fi Channel was indeed created, and what a time to be living.

The cable network (long since rebranded, ugh, Syfy) actually wasn't quite as amazing as it seemed, unless you like watching The Incredible Hulk over and over again. However, it was something at a time when the genre was still heavily distorted.

Of course, Grandma can mention at least a few Avengers in 2023, and a multiverse film like Everything Everywhere All at Once has a chance of winning the Best Picture Oscar. Baby, you've gone a long way. Additionally, Apple TV+ has become something of a successor to The Sci-Fi Channel (or to what The Sci-Fi Channel promised) in the diverse and chaotic world of streaming television these days.

While there are definitely many non-genre programmes available on the Apple streaming service (stand down, Ted Lasso fans, I hear you), the individuals selecting the material there undoubtedly have one eye (or two? more? I don't know; maybe they're aliens) on the demo comprised of nerds, geeks, and those who in 1992 were enthusiastic about The Sci-Fi Channel.

The adaptation of Isaac Asimov's renowned series of novels, Foundation, which is presently winding off its second season, may be the most aesthetically and lyrically ambitious of Apple TV+'s sci-fi entertainment. The drama depicts the slow dissolution of a galactic empire (governed by an everlasting dynasty of Lee Pace clones) and the forces at work to lessen its deadly effects, lead by Hari Seldon, a "psychohistory" scholar and prophet played by Jared Harris. The fact that the Foundation, led by executive producer David S. Goyer, has evolved into something of a stealth I, Robot tale, another Asimov classic, only adds to the attractiveness of the show, despite its occasionally rocky journey.

even in those heady days when Lou Ferrigno was prancing around on Sci-Fi, anything like Foundation—which spans decades and many characters and Big Ideas with a large “B” and “I”—always felt unfilmable. The idea of a multi-season (a third season is rumoured to be in the works) adaptation of one of the greatest sci-fi sagas in history, however, elicits little more than a simple shrug. But today, where Apple TV+ has the funds and Goyer has the guts to not only try to film Asimov's opus, but to also repurpose elements from the author's work to tell his own version of the tale, the notion somehow elicit
