| Onam Festival Celebrates Unity |
The mythological King Mahabali, a just and kind king who is thought to have ruled Kerala in antiquity, is at the centre of the Onam tale. According to the legend, the gods, especially Lord Vishnu, started to worry about Mahabali's popularity and might.
In answer, Lord Vishnu manifested as the dwarf Vamana and asked Mahabali for three paces of land. In keeping with his personality, the monarch readily concurred. Vamana, however, became bigger and encompassed the entire world in three stages. Mahabali was consequently forced into the underworld but was given a blessing to return to his realm and people once a year. This trip is commemorated as Onam each year.
The celebration is distinguished by colourful decorations, such as elaborate flower carpets called "Pookkalam," which are made by arranging various coloured flowers in intricate patterns. These gorgeous floral carpets represent King Mahabali's welcome and are a delight to behold. The celebrations also include "Onakalikal," a collective term for traditional sports and activities. These contests range from tug-of-war to classic boat races like the renowned "Vallamkali," in which coordinated races of exquisitely adorned serpent boats are held.
The mouthwatering meal known as the "Onam Sadya" is the essence of the festival of Onam. On banana leaves, a lavish vegetarian supper is given that consists of a variety of foods, each having a distinct flavour and meaning. Typically, the Sadya consists of rice, sambar, various curries, pickles, payasam (a sweet dessert), and other dishes. The meal not only highlights Kerala's diverse culinary offerings, but it also exemplifies the state's inclusiveness and sharing cultural values.
"Kaikottikali," an elegant dance style performed by women clothed traditionally, is performed by women, whereas "Pulikali," an exuberant dance style performed by men in which they dress as tigers and do extravagant routines, is performed by men. The festive mood is further enhanced by traditional music and performances, which unite localities in happiness and peace.
Onam also serves as a time to commemorate the richness of nature because it falls during the rice harvest. The event promotes gratitude for the land and its resources by highlighting the role that agriculture plays in Kerala's economy and society.
With time, Onam has grown beyond its primarily religious origins to become a multireligious cultural spectacular.
