Gangetic Dolphins


- National Aquatic Animal of India

- Known as Su Su or Blind dolphin

-found in Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers and their tributaries in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal

- Uses Biosonar for communication


Threats 

- Entanglement in fishing nets as bycatch

- Hunting for oil and meat 

- Poisoning from industrial and agricultural chemicals 

- Building of more than 50 dams along many rivers


Conservation Efforts 


- comes under Wildlife Protection Act 1972 - 

Schedule 1


IUCN Red List status - Engdangered


Protected under CITES Convention - Appendix 1

Declared as City Animal for Guwahati
