Tiny kitchen. Clever storage.
Ten low-cost fixes that turn dead cabinet space, bare doors, and empty walls into real storage — built with a Saturday afternoon, a drill, and stuff from the hardware store.

Small kitchens don't need a renovation — they need better math. Most of the storage lost in a tight kitchen isn't missing, it's just unused: the inside of a cabinet door, the six inches under a shelf, the blank stretch of wall by the fridge. Below are ten fixes that reclaim that space, roughly in order of how fast they are to build.

01
Inside-door pegboard
Turns a blank door into a tool wall
Cut a pegboard offcut to fit inside a cabinet or pantry door, and mount it with short screws through the frame. Add pegboard hooks for measuring cups, small pans, or spice tins — all off the shelf and onto the door.
Easy30 minPegboard + hooks
02
Tension rod stand-up rack
Stops trays and boards sliding flat
Wedge a spring tension rod across a cabinet, an inch or two from the back wall. It creates an instant slot for baking sheets, cutting boards, and muffin tins to stand upright instead of stacking flat.
Easy5 minTension rod
03
Under-shelf wire baskets
Doubles a shelf without adding one
Clip-on wire baskets hang from the underside of an existing shelf, using the six inches of dead air most shelves waste. Good for lids, sponges, or packets that would otherwise clutter the shelf above.
Easy10 minClip baskets
04
Magnetic strip on the fridge's side
Claims the wall nobody uses
The blank side panel of a fridge is prime, unused real estate. A magnetic knife strip holds knives, scissors, or small spice tins with magnetic bottoms — right at arm's reach from the stove.
Easy15 minMagnetic strip
05
Step-riser shelf from scrap wood
Makes the back row visible again
Three or four wood offcuts, glued and stacked into stair steps, turn a deep cabinet shelf into tiers. Cans and jars in the back row stop hiding behind the ones in front — nothing gets forgotten until it expires.
Medium45 minScrap wood + glue
06
Slatted board over the sink
Adds a whole counter that folds away
A slatted wood board cut a half-inch wider than the sink basin rests on the rim like a bridge, giving a full prep surface or drying rack whenever the sink itself isn't in use.
Medium1 hrWood slats
07
Curtain-ring lid rack
Files pot lids upright, like folders
Mount a short tension rod inside a cabinet and thread it with curtain rings. Slide a pot lid's handle through each ring and lids stand up in a row, instead of stacking loose and clattering every time one's needed.
Easy15 minRod + rings
08
Under-shelf mason jar mounts
Turns dry goods into a twist-off drawer
Screw mason jar lids to the underside of a shelf, then twist the jars up into place. Fill with spices, tea, or small dry goods that would otherwise get lost standing loose on a shelf.
Medium40 minJars + screws
09
Slim rack on a cabinet door
Fills the gap between door and shelf
A narrow spice rack mounted to the inside of a cabinet door fits the shallow gap most doors leave before the first shelf — enough depth for spice jars, foil boxes, or cutting boards on edge.
Easy20 minSlim rack
10
Custom drawer dividers
Ends the junk-drawer avalanche
Thin plywood or heavy cardboard offcuts, cut to the drawer's exact width and slotted together, build a compartment grid sized to your own gadgets — no gaps sized for someone else's cutlery set.
Medium50 minPlywood offcuts
Before you start
Measure the cabinet or gap twice — tension rods and risers only work if they're cut or set a hair too tight.
Renting? Skip the drill: tension rods, clip-on baskets, and magnetic strips hold without a single screw.
Group by reach, not by type — the things used daily belong at eye level, not the back of a deep shelf.
Test the swing — check a cabinet door still closes before you commit to screws on the inside face.
Label the jars — a twist-mounted jar you can't identify from below defeats the point.
