BEAUTY OF JAMMU(CITY OF TEMPLES)

Jammu is also known as City Of Temples. One can visit Raghunath Temple, Ranbireshwar Temple, Peer Kho Cave Temple, Bawey Wali Mata, Mahamaya Temple. Other Places of interest are Baag-e-Bahu Park, Amar Mahal Museum, Mansar Lake and the Fish Aquarium at Baag-e-Bahu. Jammu is the largest city in the Jammu Division in India. It is the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir state, sitting at a low elevation in the mainly mountainous state; Srinagar, the state's summer capital, is at a much higher elevation.

Physiography: Mountains and forest.:

Forests of the state are spread over three broad geo-climatic zones covering Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh regions of the State. Vegetation and climate can broadly be categorized into sub-tropical, temperate and alpine zones with wide diversity of fauna and flora. More than 50% of the plant species used in British pharmacopoeia are reported to grow in Jammu and Kashmir. Literature indicates that 572 plant species belonging to 109 different families have medicinal value.

The recorded Forest area is 20230 Sq. Kms. which constitutes 19.95 % of geographical area of the State. Forests are largely distributed in Kashmir Valley and Jammu regions. Leh and Kargil are devoid of Forest Vegetation as the region is cold desert.There are five forest types occurring in the State Viz. Subtropical Dry Evergreen, Himalayan Moist Temperate, Himalayan Dry Temperate, Subtropical Pine and Sub-alpine and alpine Forests.

Climate

Jammu, the climate is warm and temperate. When compared with winter, the summers have much more rainfall. According to Köppen and Geiger, this climate is classified as Cwa. The average annual temperature in Jammu is 24.2 °C. About 1238 mm of precipitation falls annually.

Historical Significance:

Jammu was founded by Raja Jambulochan in the 14th century BC who named it Jambupur. The name later morphed to Jammu. It was the winter capital of the Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir under British rule. After independence, it continues to be the state's winter capital.

Accessibility – Road, Railways, Airways, Sea routes

RAILWAY S:

Jammu is well connected by train to points south and east. Jammu Tawi railway station is an important railhead of the Northern Railways serving the Jammu and Kashmir state. It is the second to last major rail stop heading north, the last one being Udhampur, and most people only see it long enough to get from the train station to the bus stand to continue on to Srinagar. Jammu Tawi is connected to all major cities in India like Delhi (Jammu Rajdhani), Kolkata (Himgir Exp), Mumbai (Swarak Exp), Chennai (Andaman Exp) and even to the southern most Trivandrum Railway station (Himsagar Exp).

From Srinagar there are several J&K SRTC buses taking 12 hours and costing ₹150. Sumo 4wd jeep taxis also do this trip in approximately 8 hours and cost ₹200 per person (or more if you wish to hire the whole taxi to yourself). Minibuses also stop outside Jammu bus stand and more comfortable and sometimes cheaper than Sumos. For people who prefer comfortable journeys, try to hire a Toyota Innova for yourself, although it will be very expensive .


Airways:

1 Jammu Airport (IXJ IATA). An excellent airport which has many flights from Delhi and Leh. Spice Jet, Jet Airways, Air India, Goair and Deccan Airways have flights from Delhi. Roadway 

Jammu is on National Highway 1-A and is connected by the highway network to all parts of the country. 

Bus services of all classes operate to Jammu from Srinagar, Delhi, Amritsar, Ambala, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Pathankot, Shimla, Manali and Haridwar. The J&K State Road Transport Corporation (J&K SRTC) the road transport corporations of Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Chandigarh also operate bus services between Jammu and various cities in north India. All inter-state bus services operate to and from the Jammu General Bus Stand

Hill Stations:

Patnitop Hill Station is situated at 110 km away from Jammu and has an altitude of 2,024 meters. This hill is surrounded by dense forest and lush green Pines and is an unbeatable hill  station of all others hills in India.

National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries:

The Wildlife sanctuaries present in this state are Ramnagar Wildlife Sanctuary, Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary, Surinsar Mansar Wildlife Sanctuary, Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary,  and Overa Wildlife Sanctuary.

Kishtwar National Park is located in the district of Kishtawar. Brown Bear, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Musk Deer, Hangul Cervus and Ibex Capra are the wildlife’s living in this park.

Amar Mahal Palace Museum is located in Jammu and is most beautiful for the red stand stones which cover most of the places in the palace.

Bahu Fort is situated at 5 kms away from Jammu city. This is presently a temple by name Bave Wali Mata Temple.

Mubarak Mandi Palace is located at Jammu. This palace is the combination of Rajasthani, Baroque European and Mughal Styles.

Amarnath Temple is located about 145 km away from Srinagar. The ice Silva-linga that will be changing its size with respect to the season is the most attracting factor of this temple. 

Mata Vaishno Devi temple is situated at a height of 5, 300 feet and is located inside a cave by name Trikuta Bhagwat hill. 

Ranbireshwar Temple is a very popular temple in the state of Jammu and the deity of this temple is Lord Shiva. 

Shankaracharya Temple is located in Srinagar and on a hill called to be Takht-e-Suleiman. This temple is at a height of 1100 feet.


Celebrations/Festivals/ Dance/ Music

The festivals of Jammu & Kashmir would be very colorful and are very traditional. Almost every festivals of India will be celebrated in this state and among which the most popular  ones are Baisakhi, Bahu Mela, Chaitre Chaudash, Purmandal Mela, Jhiri Mela, and  Navratra Festival. 

Baisakhi is also said to be the harvesting festival.

Bahu Mela is celebrated in the month of September to October and is a major festival of the state. 

Chaitre Chaudash is celebrated in the state of Uttar Behni which is about 25 kms away from Jammu. 

 Purmandal Mela is a festival of Purmandal which is located at 39 kms away from Jammu city and is a very colorful festival. 

 Navratra Festival is celebrated in the month of September to October and is very traditional. This festival is celebrated in the auspicious days of the Navratras and is  very popular in this state.
